about Kim…

Kim krentz lives in los angeles and Has been quietly pursuing photography while raising her three children after a successful career in the film industry. Kim’s work evokes mood created by light, shadow, darkness, and shapes, that directs her gaze as she looks through the viewfinder of her cameras photographing her subjects. Sometimes in a vivid reality and other moments in a dream state, she uncovers the hidden stories within an image, allowing her viewers to interpret her work in their own way, as if each still were a silent movie.

kim primarily uses black and white film and processes each roll by hand, as she believes the process is critically important to how each image is rendered on paper. her camera is her paint brush, constantly dissecting and reassembling what is before her eyes.

los angeles and her travels around the world have been her backdrop. Performers, children, indigenous peoples have been her most valued subjects as she weaves multifaceted individuals and landscapes into her artwork.

In her current work, Solitude of the figure kim has used her time during covid to simplify her shooting Photographing in her home. Her mamiya rz67 as her sole camera she explores using various photographic techniques from singular to multiple exposures as well as objects for the viewer to interpret. Retreating from the reality of quarantine to a bright room filled with natural light she replaces the backdrop of the world she usually shoots against with a simple large piece of black fabric. alone with her models she explores and creates confined only by space.
